To plan my college magazine cover and contents page I had to undertake some research to get a feel for the task. The first piece was a questionnaire we came up with in the class, where we asked friends questions to find out how much they’d be prepared to pay for a college magazine and how often, what they’d like to see in it, the balance between photos and writing, as well as others. One good question was “What other magazines do you read regularly?” which was useful to get the tone right and overall “feeling” of the magazine.
I went with my instincts on the cover lines to use, but I came up with the idea to feature the fancy dress party on the cover when some people said it would be good to have photos from the college party in the magazine.
We also looked at other college magazine covers and had to analyse one, which you can find a few posts down. I talked about the style of the masthead and fonts used etc., which gave an idea about how to lay it out.
