What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A media institution that could distribute my music magazine would be WH Smith. They have stores across the nation and it would be good for it to go straight to the retailer. This would mean it could be sold from the store, and also because they have their own subscription service it could be available from there as well. It would also be sold through the publisher online and with mail order. This would cut out the idea of distribution from anyone else, sending it straight to the customer.

This makes more sense than going through another company which is limited to just distribution. WH Smith's expertise in the retail sector would also be a benefit, because it would take about 6 months for the magazine to establish itself, so they could promote it in their stores with an introductory price or a remix CD to encourage people to buy it. It's also associated with WH Smith's good brand image, since they are well known.

A publisher that could make the magazine would be IPC Media, as they have music magazines already and are popular in the market. My music magazine is different enough to fit in with their other ones.

  1. If WH Smith would distribute it who would publish it? And is the target audience large enough to justify such mainstream commercial high stree distribution?
